INSIGHT PAPER: The Value of National Benchmarking for Infant Hearing Screening Programs

This discussion paper provides an overview of the current status of Australian newborn hearing screening, highlighting the need for national benchmarking of activity and cost of infant hearing screening across Australian jurisdictions. There is currently no publicly available costing data related to newborn hearing screening or any other aspect of the hearing and intervention pathway in Australia. A national costing study could analyse potentially almost 10 years of data, determine best value for money between the different jurisdictional models, and identify service improvements.
